Washington Wildfires

Washington is one of the leaders in preparing for wildfire risks. The state's wildfire threat level is projected to triple by 2050 but it is one of the few states that have taken action to understand and plan for their future wildfire risks.

  • There were four and a half times as many large wildfires (larger than 1,000 acres) burning on U.S. Forest Service land in Washington each year, in the past ten years, than in the 1970s
  • The average area burned each year has also increased by four and a half times since the 1970s
