South Dakota Inland Flooding

South Dakota has the worst inland flooding preparedness score. It earns a failing grade because it has taken almost no steps at all to begin to prepare for its future inland flooding risks.

Is South Dakota Taking Action?

  • While South Dakota addresses current inland flooding risks in its Hazard Mitigation Plan, it does not have an emergency operations plan that covers inland flooding events
  • The state has done little to understand its future risks and has not conducted a statewide, detailed vulnerability assessment
  • South Dakota has also not produced a comprehensive climate change adaptation plan nor has it begun to implement strategies to improve its resilience to future inland flooding risks
