South Dakota Drought

South Dakota has one of the worst overall drought preparedness scores. It is one of only a handful of states that have taken almost no action to address their future drought risks.

Is South Dakota Taking Action?

  • Beyond a brief section in the Hazard Mitigation Plan with general information on climate change-related drought risks, the state has taken very few steps to assess it vulnerability to future droughts
  • There is no evidence that the state has begun to develop a detailed, statewide climate change adaptation plan covering drought across the sectors examined
  • The state has also taken no steps to provide official state funding or create policies or guidelines to improve resilience to climate change-related drought
