North Carolina Coastal Flooding

North Carolina has 120,000 people currently at risk of coastal flooding and 45,000 more will be at risk by 2050. Like most states, North Carolina has taken considerable steps to assess its vulnerability to climate change-related coastal flooding and to begin to make plans to address it, but so far the state has not taken any steps to implement adaptations.

Is North Carolina taking action?

  • North Carolina is ahead of most states in taking extensive action to prepare for its current coastal flooding risks through its Enhanced Hazard Mitigation Plan and Emergency Operations Plan
  • But the state is only about average compared to other states in terms of working to understand and plan for its future coastal flooding risks
  • While most coastal states have already taken some action to implement adaptation plans, North Carolina has not taken any action
