Michigan Drought

Michigan faces an above average overall summer drought threat, but it has matched this high threat level with an above average level of preparedness. In particular, Michigan has already begun to implement adaptation measures to improve its resilience to climate change-related drought.

For more information on how prepared Michigan is for its growing drought threat, read the detailed state summary.

Is Michigan taking action?

  • Michigan Department of Environmental Quality’s (DEQ) Climate Change Adaptation Plan for Coastal and Inland Wetlands in the State of Michigan discusses adaptation measures for climate change-related drought to protect water quality statewide
  • DEQ’s State Revolving Fund and Drinking Water Revolving Fund can be used to finance infrastructure projects that address long-term climate resilience, particularly to future droughts
  • However, there is no evidence that Michigan has a detailed, statewide climate change adaptation plan that addresses future drought across all sectors examined
