Maine Extreme Heat

Compared to other states, Maine has done very little to prepare for its current heat risks. While the state's current climate does not pose the heat risk faced in other regions, there are nearby states that have done much more than Maine to address today's heat risks. It has, however, begun to plan for future heat risks.

Is Maine taking action?

  • Maine does not currently include extreme heat as a relevant threat in its State Hazard Mitigation Plan
  • People and Nature: Adapting to a Changing Climate is a statewide adaptation plan containing a series of recommendation to prepare for climate change-related extreme heat risks
  • Maine has taken limited action to incorporate climate change projections associated with extreme heat into state-level programs, investments, and activities
