Kentucky Drought

While Kentucky faces a below average threat among the states with a significant threat from summer drought, it has also done less than most states to prepare for its risks. Kentucky has taken almost no steps to prepare in any way for its future droughts.

Is Kentucky taking action?

  • There is almost no evidence that Kentucky has taken steps to understand its future drought risks, develop a climate change adaptation plan, or create policies or guidelines to improve resilience to future drought
  • The Kentucky Drought Mitigation and Preparedness Plan helps the state prepare for its current drought threat and associated impacts
  • The Community Hazard Assessment and Mitigation Planning System (CHAMPS) is a database that tracks hazards and impacts at the county level in Kentucky to help local governments prepare for their current drought risks
