Illinois Drought

Illinois' summer drought threat is below average compared to other states, but it has also done less than most states to prepare for its current and future risks. Understanding and planning for its future drought risks would help improve the state's grade.

Is Illinois Taking Action?

  • The Department of Natural Resources has expressed general awareness that climate change could affect drought patterns, but Illinois has not conducted a detailed, statewide vulnerability assessment
  • Illinois has not developed a statewide climate change adaptation plan or implemented strategies to reduce impacts of its future risks
  • The Illinois State Water Survey addresses current risks by identifying communities vulnerable to drought and helping them develop drought preparedness plans
