Georgia Coastal Flooding

More than 100,000 people live within Georgia's 100-year coastal floodplain. It has taken many steps to address its current risks, but lags behind most states in addressing its future coastal flooding risks

For more information on how prepared Georgia is for its growing coastal flooding threat, read the detailed state report.

Is Georgia taking action?

  • Georgia has published some general information on climate change-related coastal flooding and impacts
  • Unlike for its other climate threats, Georgia has developed an adaptation plan for its future coastal flooding risks: Hazard and Resilience Plan for the Coast of Georgia includes preparedness measures to reduce the impacts of coastal flooding and storm surge events
  • However, Georgia's coastal flooding adaptation plan does not cover specific sectors and recommendations from it have not been implemented to improve resilience

Did you know...

  • Georgia currently has 650 square miles that fall within the 100-year coastal floodplain; by 2050, this area is projected to increase to more than 900 square miles
