California Wildfires

California faces the second largest wildfire threat compared to other states, but it has also taken the strongest actions towards increasing its preparedness for future wildfires.

For more information on how prepared California is for its growing wildfires threat, read the detailed state report.

Is California taking action?

  • California is the only state that has taken strong action to understand its vulnerability and the only state that has taken extensive action to plan for its future risks through the California Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan and Safeguarding California report
  • The state's Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) produces the Ready for Wildfire website, which provides extensive wildfire preparedness information for Californians

Did you know...

  • Over the past ten years, more than 400,000 acres have burned each year, on average, on U.S. Forest Service land in California, which is almost three times the amount burned each year in the 1970s
  • From 2003-2012, nearly half of all the money spent fighting wildfires in the western U.S. went to California fires
