California Inland Flooding

California has nearly 1.3 million people living in flood-prone areas, more than any other state. It is one of a few states that have taken strong action to understand its vulnerability under future climates, and extensive action to plan for future inland flooding risks.

For more information on how prepared California is for its growing inland flooding threat, read the detailed state report.

Is California taking action?

  • California already provides a lot of guidance for incorporating future inland flooding risks into community planning and development through, for example, the Safeguarding California climate change adaptation plan
  • The state has not yet implemented many projects at the state level to specifically address its future inland flooding risks

Did you know?

  • Over the last decade, there were 75 percent more very heavy downpours in the San Francisco Bay area than in the 1950s
  • By 2050, California is projected to face the nation's biggest inland flooding threat level
