California Drought

California is projected to see a large increase in its summer drought threat by 2050. It has taken more steps than any other state to prepare for its drought risks.

Is California taking action?

  • California is the only state to have taken extensive action to plan for its future drought risks in all relevant sectors assessed though the Safeguarding California adaption plan
  • In addition, the state has well-defined tools for addressing its currents drought risks, including its Integrated Water Resources Management program, which helps ensure that regions are able to meet their water needs; it covers 87 percent of the state’s area, and 99 percent of the state’s population
