Climate Central is an independent group of scientists and science translators who research and report the facts about our changing climate and how it affects people’s lives. We use science and tech to generate thousands of local storylines and compelling visuals that make climate change relevant and show what can be done about it. We address climate science, sea level rise, extreme weather, energy, and related topics. We collaborate with journalists, TV meteorologists, and other respected messengers, reaching broad audiences through local voices in the US and 150 nations. Our research and visuals appear in thousands of TV spots and well over ten thousand other news stories each year, and our impact is growing.
About the role:
Climate Central is working to greatly increase the extent to which U.S. news and weather reports--especially in state and local media--discuss how climate change is influencing the weather. This is a growing and important field of work that brings together science, communication and relationships. As part of this effort, we are recruiting a Media Associate who will work with meteorologists, weather presenters, and journalists to help them build interesting and accurate reports about climate change and weather. This is an exciting role for media professionals who are passionate about climate change and want to be part of a dedicated team of scientists, researchers, analysts, and communicators. This position is for a one-year term with the possibility of renewal.
Job activities include but are not limited to:
Building and maintaining strong relationships with meteorologists, weather presenters, and journalists, becoming a trusted source for them and a provider of expert analysis:
Creating and maintaining media lists, identifying outlets and individuals who would be interested in receiving materials about climate change and weather;
Engaging directly with reporters, to understand their needs and how they can be supported;
Developing expertise on climate change and extreme weather, while also arranging access to climate scientists and others with specialized skills and knowledge.
Identifying moments where engagement would be effective, and reacting quickly to produce and pitch relevant content:
Working with colleagues to develop processes for monitoring extreme events, where materials on climate science would be of interest and featured in coverage;
Rapidly responding to events, producing materials with scientific colleagues that will be useful for meteorologists, weather presenters and journalists;
Pitching materials, follow-up where appropriate and be available and helpful when further support would be useful;
Looking for other opportunities, beyond the immediate response to extreme events, to help communicate the relationships between climate change and weather.
A passion for addressing climate change in urgent, just, and empowering ways
Experience successfully pitching evidence-based news stories, with a solid understanding of what journalists need and how they work
A demonstrated ability to quickly find and work through potentially unfamiliar scientific information and extract points that will interest journalists and accurately summarize them in media-friendly ways
Excellent written, verbal, and digital communication skills
High level of self-motivation and personal responsibility, with an ability to work at a fast pace as part of dispersed teams, and prioritize based on where you can have the most impact and reprioritize at short notice
A track record of experimenting, learning, and iterating in order to meet goals and achieve high impact
Excellent collaboration skills with a track record of working effectively with colleagues and partners across difference
Preference will be given to candidates who:
Bring understanding of scientific evidence about the relationship between climate change and extreme weather
Have contacts with relevant journalists, particularly at the state and local level
Compensation: The expected base salary range for this position is $65,000-$70,000 USD. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Climate Central offers generous benefits including paid vacation, 12 weeks paid family leave, medical, dental, 401K with up to 12% matching, and partial college tuition for children of employees who qualify.
Location and employment eligibility: This position can be mostly remote, in accordance with Climate Central organizational policy. Presence at headquarters or other U.S.-based locations is required for periodic team and organizational meetings, events and retreats. Climate Central’s headquarters are in Princeton, N.J., operating under standard U.S. Eastern time business hours. Preference will be given to candidates who are able to be present in our Princeton, NJ office at least twice per month, and ideally once per week or more. Candidates must be eligible for employment in the United States. This position is for a one-year term with the possibility of renewal.
