Extreme Heat

The growing threat of extreme heat can adversely impact public health, strain the power sector, and put stress on critical infrastructure. Our analysis assesses each state’s extreme heat threat based on the average annual number of heat wave days and the population in that state considered especially vulnerable to extreme heat, including the young and elderly living below the poverty line.

Key Findings

  • Extreme heat is the most pervasive threat, affecting all 50 states.

  • It is also the threat where states are least prepared; only 7 states have taken strong action to prepare for their extreme heat risks.

  • Half of the lower 48 states are projected to experience at least a four-fold increase in heat wave days by 2050.
